The Prohibited List

Also written wada; world anti-doping

By Diane Walker · Reference Editor

The Prohibited List is the World Anti-Doping Code International Standard naming the substances and methods prohibited in sport. It is revised annually and takes effect on January 1. It governs eligibility to compete and nothing else: it is not drug law, it does not decide whether a substance may be sold, prescribed or compounded, and it is issued by a body with no regulatory authority over medicines.

Its peptide sections are expressly non-exhaustive, and section S0 prohibits any pharmacological substance with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use. A substance the List does not name may therefore still be prohibited by description, which is why absence from the List is never evidence that a compound is permitted in sport.
